Galicia and green Spain

Galicia is a beautiful, mystical and cultural region in what many tourists and holiday experts now refer to as Green Spain.

Located just above Portugal, Galicia enjoys a warm climate, but does not suffer the stifling temperatures of southern Spain. It is for this reason that Galicia enjoys a lush greenness to its scenery and an atmosphere and culture that may make you question if you are even in Spain at all. This climate also makes a holiday in Galicia ideal for waking and exploring, and there is plenty to see and do. Your biggest challenge is to make sure that you do not miss out on Galicia's tourist attractions.

Galicia also has some interesting legends and mythology attached to it, some of which have a basis in fact and some of which ....... …require a little bit more imagination. All told Galicia is region that may surprise you on all levels.

Galicia is famous for its wine, its seafood, which is the envy of the rest of Europe, along with the richness of its history and heritage. The region has mountain ranges, a world famous pilgrim trail, more sandy beaches than any of Spain's southern regions and a culture that connects itself strongly with the Celts. There are no sombreros in Galicia, but do expect to see and hear bagpipes, especially during the summer festivities.

Galicia's main cities

Galicia contains four provinces named, la Coruna, Pontevedra, Lugo and Ourense and whilst each of these provinces has a city named after it, it is the region's most famous city, Santiago de Compostela, that most Galician tourists are familiar with.

Santiago is a city with a history dating back almost 1000 years and its fame and significance have a deep connection with its links to the prophet Saint James. Every year hundreds of thousands of pilgrims embark on the road to Santiago (the Camino pilgrimage), most travelling on foot and some from as far a field as France.

Santiago de Compostela also boasts one of the most beautifully maintained medieval old towns in the world and although its twin towered cathedral is the most notable, it has numerous other architectural masterpieces.

Despite Santiago's importance, it is far from Galicia's only city of note. Many believe the medieval old town of Pontevedra to be at least as attractive and the 2000 year old city of Lugo has a Roman wall surrounding it with battlements, turrets and all the trappings of the fortress stronghold that it once was. Ourense too has much to commend it including a cathedral and some of the busiest tapas bars in Galicia.
